"Removing Wallpaper Paste"
My daughter has removed wallpaper from her kitchen and has used DIF to try to get the paste from the wall since I have told her that ALL of it must be gone before we can paint and faux. However, she has rubbed and scrubbed several times and some of the paste still remains. Is there a solution to this or some tried and true method to get it all off?

Thanks for any help any of you offer!

I had the same problem in my kitchen--walls were old plaster and it was impossible to get all the old paste off. I finally gave up and skim-coated the whole thing with joint compound.

On a related note, is this the kind of problem that would be prevented by using sizing before papering? I know it (sizing) is supposed to make the paper easier to strip later, so probably it keeps the paste from adhering so vigorously to the walls, huh?

You can prime with an oil based primer or Bin (made by Zinnser a shellac based primer, my personal favorite) and the glue will be sealed by the primer. Being oil or shellac will not reactivate the glue as will a latex product.

I work in a store that sells wallpaper and carpeting. There are products on the market that mix with hot water,(any wallpaper store or home deco. store should have it at a reasonable price) let sit 15 minutes and take a spatula and run it over the walls to get the bulk of paste off. Be sure to wipe the spatula after each "swoop". (a pancake spatula works great and won't gouge the walls. Then wash with tsp and warm water. It should remove excess paste. Hope this helps.

Good luck
