"painting basement floor to look like marble, is it possible?"
I am going to trompe L'oeil my basement walls
and want to paint the floor like marble.
How do I go about painting the floor so that
it doesn't chip or peel away?
Any suggestions? (its a dry basement)

1. "floors"
On cement floors I have found that a paint called Break-Thru (or Break-Through, I can't remember which). It is a water based swimming pool type paint. The colors are pretty basic, but a good small paint store can make a lot of mixes with the white, and there is always Tints All and acrylic paints that can be added. The paint takes it beautifully. And there is even a clear coat that you can blend as a glave or on its own as a sealer. But the stuff does smell sharper(much) than regular water based paints.

2. "basement floor"
I just painted a showroom that was unfinished concrete floor. I used paint specifically made for concrete floors(check the labels) and then sealed it with polyurethane(oil) several coats. I did paint acrylic over the concret paint base for some decorative marble designs and stuff. The polyurethane will keep it all sealed well. Good luck!

I read a response you wrote about painting a concrete floor. I'm beginning my research on how to paint or stain a concrete living room floor. I'm looking for a variety of styles/designs to look at. Any suggestions?

5. "cement"
I've cone quite a bit of work on cement. Remember that it is porous, so that almost anything will act os a stain if it is watery and the cement hasn't been sealed. You can use wood stains, Thinned paints, analine dyes, etc. And seal it to keep it gorgeous.
